You’re a fixer. You see potential in broken people. You fall for the “diamond in the rough” – the artist with no job, the entrepreneur drowning in debt, the charming narcissist who just needs a good woman/man to save them. You pour your energy, money, and love into them, believing that if you just love them hard enough, they’ll become the person they’re meant to be.

Spoiler: they don’t change. They drain you. And you’re left exhausted, resentful, and single again – asking: “Why do I always attract the projects?”

The answer is painful but liberating: you’re not attracting projects – you’re choosing them. And you’re choosing them because you’re afraid of being chosen by someone whole. A healthy partner forces you to show up as your full, healthy self. A project allows you to hide behind their problems and avoid your own growth.

SUBHEADING: The Psychology of the “Savior Complex”

If you grew up feeling responsible for other people’s emotions – perhaps as a parentified child or a caretaker – you carry that pattern into adulthood. You equate love with sacrifice. You feel uncomfortable when someone treats you well because it feels “unearned.”

So you find someone who needs fixing. You become their therapist, their financial planner, their life coach. And when they still fail, you blame yourself for not trying hard enough.

This is a trap. And it’s the number one reason high-value singles stay single.

SUBHEADING: The Brutal Truth About “Potential”

Potential is not reality. Potential is the picture in your head of what they could be. But you are dating a human being who exists right now. If they are inconsistent, selfish, or unstable right now – that is who they are. Marriage doesn’t fix that. Moving in doesn’t fix that. Having a baby definitely doesn’t fix that.

You need to start dating the resume, not the interview. Look at their past relationships – how did they end? Look at their financial habits – are they stable? Look at their emotional responses – can they regulate anger? If the data is ugly, believe it. Stop hoping they’ll write a new story just for you.

SUBHEADING: The 3-Question Test to Filter Out Projects

Before you say “yes” to the next date, ask yourself these three questions. If any answer is “no,” walk away:

  1. “Is this person’s life stable enough to include me?” – Do they have a job, a home, and basic adulting skills? You are not a rehabilitation center.
  2. “Do they bring me energy, or take it away?” – After a date, do you feel buzzed or exhausted? If you’re drained, that’s a red flag.
  3. “Would I be proud to introduce them to my boss/parents as they are today?” – If you feel the need to preface with “He’s going through a rough patch,” move on.

SUBHEADING: What Happens When You Stop Fixing

When I finally stopped dating projects, I had three months of no dates. It was scary. I thought, “I’ll never meet anyone.” Then, I met my fiancé. He had his life together. He didn’t need me to save him – he wanted me to join him. The relationship was easy. No rollercoaster. No drama. Just two whole people building a life.

I was so addicted to the highs and lows of “fixing” that easy felt “boring” at first. But boring is actually peace. And peace is the foundation of lasting love.

SUBHEADING: Your Healing Starts Tonight

You don’t need to stop dating; you need to stop rescuing. Make a list of every partner you’ve had in the last ten years. Write down what was “wrong” with them. Notice the pattern. Are you dating the same broken archetype?

Awareness is the first step to freedom. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it. And you’ll finally be ready for the kind of partner who doesn’t need saving – but who will save you from a lifetime of disappointment.

I’ve created a free worksheet called “The Project Detector” that helps you spot these patterns in real-time before you invest your heart.
