You’ve heard it a million times: “You can’t love someone else until you love yourself.” It’s become a cliché. But it’s also true.

Low self?esteem sabotages relationships. It makes you needy, jealous, and dependent. It attracts partners who are also wounded. And it keeps you from receiving love.

In this article, we’ll explore why self?love is the foundation of healthy love – and how to build it.

SUBHEADING: How Low Self?Esteem Affects Your Love Life

  • You settle: You accept less than you deserve because you don’t think you deserve more.
  • You’re needy: You seek constant validation because you don’t value yourself.
  • You attract the wrong people: Wounded partners are drawn to wounded partners.
  • You repel healthy partners: Confidence is attractive. Insecurity is not.

SUBHEADING: The “Self?Esteem” Audit

Ask yourself:

  • Do I feel worthy of love? Be honest.
  • Do I seek validation from others? Am I constantly checking for approval?
  • Do I settle? Do I accept behavior that I wouldn’t accept for a friend?

SUBHEADING: How to Build Self?Esteem

Step 1: Stop the Negative Self?Talk
Every time you think “I’m not enough,” challenge it. “That’s not true. I am enough.”

Step 2: Take Care of Yourself
Exercise. Eat well. Sleep enough. When you treat your body well, you send a message: “I am worth caring for.”

Step 3: Set Boundaries
Say no when you need to. Protect your time and energy. Boundaries are a form of self?respect.

Step 4: Celebrate Your Wins
Acknowledge your accomplishments, big and small. You did that. You’re capable.

Step 5: Surround Yourself With Supportive People
Spend time with people who lift you up, not tear you down.

SUBHEADING: The “Self?Esteem” Myth – You Don’t Have to Be Perfect to Love

You just need to be enough – and you already are.

Your next step: Do one thing today that makes you feel good about yourself. A workout, a healthy meal, a boundary, a kind word to yourself.
