A Day in the Life of a Man Preparing for a First Date – Every Thought, Every Doubt, Every Decision

The Coffee Shop Experiment – 7 Days, 7 Approaches, 1 Life-Changing Discovery

PAGE ONE

PANEL 1

Wide shot. A messy apartment. Clothes on the floor. A half-eaten pizza on the coffee table. A man in his early thirties – DANIEL – sits on the couch, scrolling through his phone. His face is lit by the screen.

CAPTION: 11:47 PM. Tuesday. Daniel has been single for two years, three months, and eleven days. Not that he’s counting.

DANIEL (thought bubble): Maybe I’ll just swipe for five minutes. Then sleep.

PANEL 2

Close-up of the phone screen. A profile appears. A woman named SARAH. She’s a teacher. She loves hiking. She has a photo of herself at the top of a mountain, arms raised in triumph.

DANIEL (thought bubble): She looks… happy. Actually happy. Not the fake happy people use in profiles.

PANEL 3

Daniel’s thumb hovers over the screen. He hesitates.

DANIEL (thought bubble): What if I message her and she doesn’t reply? What if she does reply and we go on a date and it’s awkward? What if—

PANEL 4

He swipes right. A match notification appears. His eyes widen.

DANIEL (speech bubble): No way.

CAPTION: Sometimes the universe doesn’t wait for you to be ready.

PAGE TWO

PANEL 1

Daniel is now sitting upright. He’s typing. He deletes. He types again. He deletes. He types a third time.

DANIEL (thought bubble): Just say something. Anything. Don’t overthink it.

PANEL 2

He sends the message: “Hey Sarah, I saw you like hiking. What’s the best trail you’ve done this year?”

DANIEL (thought bubble): That’s it. That’s all I’ve got. Now I wait.

PANEL 3

A clock on the wall. 12:03 AM. Daniel is still holding his phone. He’s staring at it.

CAPTION: Waiting is the hardest part.

PANEL 4

A notification appears. Sarah has replied. Daniel’s face breaks into a smile.

SARAH (text): “Hey Daniel! I just did a trail in Colorado. It was brutal but beautiful. What about you?”

DANIEL (speech bubble): She replied.

CAPTION: And just like that, the story begins.

ISSUE #2: THE FIRST DATE

PAGE FIVE

PANEL 1

Exterior shot. A coffee shop. The sun is shining. Daniel is standing outside, looking at his phone. He’s wearing a blue button-down. He looks nervous.

DANIEL (thought bubble): Okay. You’ve got this. Just be yourself. But not too much yourself. The filtered version.

PANEL 2

Sarah walks up. She’s wearing a green dress. She smiles when she sees him.

SARAH (speech bubble): Hey! Daniel?

DANIEL (speech bubble): Hey. Yeah. Hi. Good to see you.

PANEL 3

They stand there for a beat. Daniel goes for a handshake. Sarah goes for a hug. They collide awkwardly. Both laugh.

SARAH (speech bubble): Let’s try that again.

DANIEL (speech bubble): Yeah. Sorry. I’m a little nervous.

SARAH (speech bubble): Me too.

CAPTION: Honesty. It’s a superpower.

PANEL 4

They sit down at a table. A coffee cup in front of each of them.

SARAH (speech bubble): So. You’re an architect?

DANIEL (speech bubble): Yeah. I design buildings. Nothing fancy. Mostly office spaces.

SARAH (speech bubble): That’s cool. Do you like it?

DANIEL (speech bubble): I do. It’s not the most glamorous job, but I like the problem-solving part.

PANEL 5

Sarah leans in. She’s engaged.

SARAH (speech bubble): What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on?

DANIEL (thought bubble): She’s asking follow-up questions. That’s a good sign. Right? That’s good.

DANIEL (speech bubble): There was this one building where the client wanted a rooftop garden. It was a nightmare to design, but it turned out beautiful.

SARAH (speech bubble): I love that. I’ve always wanted a rooftop garden.

PAGE SEVEN

PANEL 1

They’re both laughing. The coffee cups are empty. They’ve been talking for over an hour.

CAPTION: Two hours later.

SARAH (speech bubble): I should probably go. I have an early meeting tomorrow.

DANIEL (speech bubble): Yeah. Of course.

PANEL 2

They walk outside. They stand on the sidewalk. There’s a moment of silence.

DANIEL (speech bubble): I had a really good time.

SARAH (speech bubble): Me too.

DANIEL (speech bubble): I’d love to do this again.

SARAH (speech bubble): I’d like that.

PANEL 3

Close-up on Daniel’s face. He’s smiling. Genuinely smiling.

DANIEL (thought bubble): Don’t mess this up. Just… don’t mess this up.

PANEL 4

They part ways. Sarah walks one direction. Daniel walks the other. He looks back. She looks back. They both smile.

CAPTION: And that’s how it starts.

ISSUE #3: THE LULL

PAGE TEN

PANEL 1

Third date. A park. They’re walking on a path. The sun is setting. It’s beautiful.

SARAH (speech bubble): I used to come here with my dad when I was a kid.

DANIEL (speech bubble): That’s nice. What was he like?

SARAH (speech bubble): He was quiet. But kind. He didn’t say much. But he showed up.

PANEL 2

Daniel nods. He doesn’t say anything. The silence stretches. Five seconds. Ten seconds.

DANIEL (thought bubble): Say something. Anything. Don’t let the silence kill this.

PANEL 3

But he doesn’t say anything. He just walks. And she walks beside him. The silence continues. But it’s not awkward. It’s comfortable.

SARAH (speech bubble): You’re not afraid of silence.

DANIEL (speech bubble): What do you mean?

SARAH (speech bubble): Most people fill every pause. You don’t. It’s nice.

PANEL 4

Daniel smiles. He didn’t realize that not talking was a strength.

DANIEL (thought bubble): Maybe I don’t have to be perfect. Maybe I just have to be present.

ISSUE #4: THE FIGHT

PAGE FIFTEEN

PANEL 1

Six months later. Daniel’s apartment. Sarah is standing near the door. She looks upset. Daniel is sitting on the couch, his head in his hands.

SARAH (speech bubble): You never tell me anything. I feel like I’m dating a wall.

DANIEL (speech bubble): I don’t know what you want me to say.

SARAH (speech bubble): I want you to tell me how you feel. I want you to tell me what’s going on in your head.

PANEL 2

Daniel looks up. His eyes are red.

DANIEL (speech bubble): I’m scared.

SARAH (speech bubble): Of what?

DANIEL (speech bubble): Of losing you. Of messing this up. Of being too much. Of not being enough.

PANEL 3

Sarah sits down next to him. She takes his hand.

SARAH (speech bubble): I’m scared too. But we can be scared together.

PANEL 4

They sit there. Holding hands. The silence is back. But this time, it’s not comfortable. It’s heavy. But they’re in it together.

CAPTION: Love isn’t about avoiding the hard stuff. It’s about facing it together.

ISSUE #5: THE REALIZATION

PAGE TWENTY

PANEL 1

A year later. Daniel is sitting on a park bench. He’s alone. He’s holding a letter.

CAPTION: Sarah moved to Portland for a job. They tried long distance. It didn’t work.

DANIEL (thought bubble): I thought she was the one. But maybe there is no “one.” Maybe there’s just… people. And timing. And choice.

PANEL 2

He looks up at the sky. The sun is setting. It’s the same park where they walked on their third date.

DANIEL (thought bubble): I learned a lot from her. I learned that I can be vulnerable. I learned that I can be present. I learned that I can love someone.

PANEL 3

A woman walks by. She’s walking a dog. She smiles at Daniel. He smiles back.

DANIEL (thought bubble): Maybe this is the beginning. Not the end.

PANEL 4

He stands up. He puts the letter in his pocket. He walks toward the sunset.

CAPTION: The story doesn’t end. It just changes chapters.

THE END… FOR NOW.
