Introduction
This isn’t a real letter. I never sent it. But writing it helped me understand what happened, why it hurt, and what I learned. Maybe it will help you too.
Dear Chloe,
You don’t remember me. We went on three dates. They were good dates – at least I thought so. We laughed. We talked about the things that matter. You told me about your family. I told you about mine. You said you had a good time. I said the same.
Then you stopped responding.
I didn’t send a follow-up message. I didn’t double-text. I just let it go. But I spent a long time wondering why.
I know it wasn’t a deep connection. It was only three dates. But the silence hurt more than I expected. I didn’t realize how much I was investing emotionally until you disappeared.
What I Learned
I learned that I can handle rejection.
You didn’t reject me as a person. You just decided I wasn’t a good fit. That’s not a statement about my worth – it’s a statement about our compatibility. I’m okay with that now. It took me a while, but I am.
I learned that I was seeking validation.
I realized I was looking for you to like me as a way of proving I was likable. That’s not your job – it’s mine. I needed to learn to like myself without needing confirmation from others.
I learned that timing matters.
Maybe you were going through something. Maybe you met someone else. Maybe you just weren’t ready. I don’t know. And I’ve accepted that I don’t need to know.
I learned that it wasn’t personal.
It felt personal, but it wasn’t. You were trying to figure out what you wanted. You did what felt right to you. I can’t fault you for that.
I learned to let go of the “why.”
I spent too much time trying to figure out what I did wrong. But the “why” wasn’t something I could control. I had to let it go.
What You Taught Me
You taught me that I am stronger than I thought. That I can handle rejection without spiraling. That I can let go without needing closure. You taught me that not every connection needs to last to be meaningful.
I hope you’re happy, wherever you are. And I’m grateful for what you taught me, even if you didn’t mean to.
What I Would Tell Someone in My Situation
If you’ve been ghosted, here’s the advice I wish I’d gotten earlier:
- Don’t send a follow-up. Let them go.
- Don’t look for answers you’ll never get.
- Don’t let it define how you see yourself.
- Don’t close yourself off to love.
- Don’t let one ghost make you afraid to try again.
