Online dating is full of advice. A lot of it is old, recycled, or just plain wrong. Here are some of the most common myths I’ve heard, broken down by what’s actually true.

Myth 1: “You Have to Be Super Attractive to Get Matches”

Truth: Personality and effort matter more than looks. A guy with average looks who puts effort into his profile and messages will do better than someone who relies on his photos alone. Being interesting, kind, and present is more attractive than looking like a model.

Myth 2: “Women Only Care About Money”

Truth: Women care about stability and security. They care if you have a plan. They care if you’re responsible. But they don’t care about “money” in the way that myth suggests. A guy who’s building something is more attractive than a guy who’s already made it and is coasting.

Myth 3: “The First Message Should Be a Pickup Line”

Truth: Pickup lines are a gamble. They can work, but they often come across as rehearsed. A genuine, personal message based on something in her profile is almost always better.

Myth 4: “If She Doesn’t Reply, She Wasn’t Interested”

Truth: Sometimes life gets in the way. She might be overwhelmed by messages, busy, or just not on the app. It doesn’t always mean she wasn’t interested.

Myth 5: “You Should Wait 3 Days to Text Back”

Truth: The 3-day rule is outdated. If you like her, text her. She’ll appreciate the promptness.

Myth 6: “Nice Guys Finish Last”

Truth: Nice guys who are also strong and interesting don’t finish last. Nice guys who are passive and insecure might. Being kind is great. Being a pushover is not.

Myth 7: “Dating Apps Are Only for Hookups”

Truth: Some are. Some aren’t. Apps like Match, Hinge, and Bumble have many people looking for relationships. You just have to be clear about what you want and be intentional.

Myth 8: “You Have to Be Perfect”

Truth: No one is perfect. The people who succeed in dating are the ones who accept their imperfection and show up as themselves anyway. It’s much more attractive to be real than to be perfect.

A Case Study: Jason’s Misconceptions

Jason had been single for three years. He was convinced that women didn’t want him because of his height. He’d heard the line “height matters.” He’d seen women’s profiles that said “over 6 feet.” But after he started focusing on his personality and the quality of his conversation, he started getting more matches.

He met a woman named Chloe. She was taller than him. She didn’t care. She cared that he was funny, interesting, and present.
